Art, football and buildings on the Tiwi Islands

Our daughter used to live at Nguiu on Bathurst Island and we’ve also visited for the annual AFLTiwi Grand Final – a big event which is coming up on 17th-18th March. For the event,  entry permits are not required to enter Nguiu, and light aircraft  at the Nguiu airstrip are like ticks on a dog. At all other times you must have a permit and usually you can only visit by taking one of the excellent Tiwi tours that are available. One the big things about the grand final is the Art Festival which occurs on that day….make sure you take your wallet if you go, as the temptation to spend will be difficult to resist.

The designs painted on some of the buildings around town are truly unique. Top End visitors or residents who haven’t been are missing out on a treat if they don’t make it over there.
